How to Measure Doors, Windows and Ceiling Height

Choose a consistent reference

Name the walls and use one clearly stated unit throughout the sketch. Record the position of each opening relative to a known corner, as well as its width and height. Note whether a measurement describes the clear opening, frame or outer trim. Include the direction of door movement. These distinctions matter when the designer interprets the available wall area. If two measurements do not reconcile, retain the discrepancy as a question instead of silently adjusting one to make the drawing close.

Describe the vertical conditions

Record window sill height and the top of the opening relative to the floor where safely accessible. Note ceiling height at more than one location and identify slopes, soffits or visible changes. Photograph the corresponding area so the written dimensions have context. Do not climb or remove building elements to obtain a preliminary measurement. Mark inaccessible information for the professional review. A simple rectangular room model may not represent every vertical condition in the actual space.

Keep the measurements preliminary

Review openings and furniture placement warnings, but do not interpret them as confirmation of code or production suitability.
